New congressional map approved in louisiana
May 29th, Governor Landry signed SB 121 that was voted on and approved by the Louisiana republican senate after it left the redistricting committee on May 13th. SB 121 will redistrict the sixth district in order to eliminate a minority majority district that was represented by Rep. Cleo Fields.
Even though this map has received many critics by the NAACP, ACLU and Louisiana Democratic Party, that cites that this map will violate the Voting Rights Act, the republican senate approved the map by a majority vote with 28 yays and 10 nays. Republicans hope to add another seat controlled by the republican party but Rep. Clay Higgins, republican of the 3rd district, scolded the map on X where he called the map a “Frankenstein looking thing.”
